Material & Care
Why do we actually use climbing rope? What makes the material special, etc.
"They tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds." Mexican proverb
For us, NEWSEED means cycle. Something old creates something new...
When we started out, it wasn't the product that was important to us, but the desire to save resources and create something that would make the world a little bit better, rather than worse. When we noticed that tons of climbing rope had to be disposed of prematurely, we felt called upon and responsible to change this.
We are also receiving more and more requests, for example, can you use my old tent? Can you reuse paragliders? And of course we are happy to accept the challenge here too and continue to process whatever is possible.
We have come up with a concept that gives everyone the opportunity to become a rope rescuer.
We are setting up recycling stations in more and more climbing halls where climbers can dispose of their old ropes. Wherever there is a recycling station, the climbing hall itself also participates as a partner in recycling and collects all of its hall ropes for reuse.
We also recycle offcuts that arise during Edelrid's production. Freshly produced materials definitely deserve to be used before they are thrown away. What do you think?
If your NEWSEED product looks dirty, it is due to the natural aging of the climbing rope, which has been in use for years. It has been through a lot and that is exactly what makes it so unique. Let your imagination run wild - perhaps your belt has been on Mount Everest or ice climbing in Antarctica in a previous life. Who knows what adventures are hidden in our products.
Before we manufacture a product, the ropes are thoroughly sorted and any areas that are too worn are removed. All old climbing ropes are thoroughly washed and then visibly shine in new splendor.
They are then flattened. To do this, the shell is separated from the core and then pressed flat in a mangle under high heat.
Climbing ropes are made for extreme situations when climbing, expeditions, rescue missions, industrial climbing, etc. People depend on them with their lives, which is why years of high-tech development work go into each rope. Not only the braiding process, but also the finishing of the ropes is immensely complex and time-consuming. Long durability and resilience are always the top priority in the constantly advancing development.
You can find out more about all the manufacturing processes in the rope guide from our partner Edelrid .
All materials we use are upcycled.
Most of the materials are left over from our friendly company Weisshäupl , a well-known manufacturer of parasols and outdoor furniture. Weisshäupl is one of the few manufacturers that manufactures all of its products by hand in its own workshop, right around the corner from us. We certainly don't need to tell you that the high quality of the products is what makes the company so successful.
The materials we source here are of correspondingly high quality.
We also recycle old paragliders and tents, for example in our boulder bag. We are always happy to receive donations ;)
CLEANING
The climbing rope is made of textile and is therefore washable.
Gentle wash cycle for wool at 30° or hand wash. It is best to wash your product in the washing machine in a laundry bag.
It is important not to spin or tumble dry!
It is best to use a mild synthetic detergent.
Belts, placemats, coasters, bags, all products that can be ironed should definitely be ironed ! Don't worry, it's very quick and the product will also dry more quickly and be super flat again.
Please use 80°-105° Celsius, never too hot, otherwise the rope will melt.
CARE
There's actually not much to consider here. Sometimes climbing ropes tend to fuzz after long periods of use and abrasion. You can carefully run a lighter over the fuzz to smooth it out.
Even if we iron the rope sheaths until they are really flat, the many thousands of interwoven fibers can shift. A quick ironing over them helps here.
Especially with belts, a quick ironing helps to get them back into shape. Over time, they will then become more and more stable.
recycling & stations
Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about recycling and our recycling stations.
You can find a recycling station near you here .
We are working on setting up recycling stations across the country. Until then, you can of course send us your rope by post. Since our recycling partners are collecting ever larger quantities of rope, we are currently no longer able to send free return labels for individual ropes.
If you still want to send your rope, you can send it to this address:
Lebenshilfe gGmbH
- private rope donation -
Franz-Mehring-Str.9a
03172 Guben
And ask the climbing gym you trust if they would like to join in ;)
You can also throw carabiners, old tents (no metal please) and fabric banners into the recycling station.
Unfortunately, we are currently not accepting any climbing harnesses. We are currently working on a product in which we can use climbing harnesses. Since climbing halls and high ropes courses generate a huge amount of climbing harnesses, our warehouses are currently full of harnesses waiting to be processed. This is why we are unfortunately unable to accept any more harnesses at the moment.
We don't throw anything away, nothing ends up in the residual or bulky waste. We carefully examine the ropes and cut out any parts that can no longer be used in products, e.g. because they are too swollen or worn.
We give some rope cores to small manufacturers or social institutions and use them to make various macrame products, such as plant hangers. We separate all rope scraps and rope cores that are not used in products. Most climbing ropes are made of 100% polyamide, and this raw material can be recycled again in high quality. We collect polyamide-polyester mixtures separately and this is also recycled, but it is then no longer as valuable for the further recycling process.
product questions
Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our products.
Yes, that is possible. You will certainly have many wonderful hours and memories associated with your rope and we can preserve them in a product.
Depending on the type of rope, we can:
Make belts, key rings, bracelets with stainless steel clasps (half ropes only), placemats and coasters.
Just send us an email to shop(at) newseed.de
You will then receive a note from us for the custom-made product and a free shipping label for sending the rope.
We do not charge any extra for the custom-made product, you pay the same price as in the online shop.
The delivery time depends on the current workload and can be between 1-6 weeks. Of course, we will give you an approximate delivery date beforehand. Payment before delivery.
All of our products are limited editions and, due to the different nature of the ropes, are usually unique. We don't have anything off the shelf.
Chalkbags, for example, are only available in 6 pieces of the same edition
Belt 10 pieces
Bags usually only 2 pieces and max 5 pieces per design
Only for small products, such as bracelets and key rings, we produce 15-25 pieces per edition.
And when the edition is sold out, a new limited small series will be released!
Sure, it's possible that products will repeat themselves over time, but it's more than unlikely that, for example, a chalk bag edition will be produced in exactly the same way again.
So what you buy is something no one else will have any time soon. And if they do, it's a great coincidence and should be celebrated. Because then the person you're talking to is one of the few who chose exactly this piece ;)
Belts with NEWSEED buckles can be easily shortened to your desired size. You can find instructions on the back of the banderole on the belt.
The belt end is shortened without a metal end. And this is how it works:
1. Turn the belt buckle over, loosen the clamp & pull out the belt
2. Measure the belt and cut it to the desired length with scissors
3. Seal the cut edge well with a lighter so that nothing can fray. Clamp it back in place and you're done!
Retro belts are plain and always have a length of 115 cm. Shortening them is not so easy and requires a little tact. If you still want to try it: Here's how to do it:
1. carefully loosen the metal end cap
2. Cut the belt to the correct length and seal the cut edge well with a lighter
3. Replace the end cap and press it together again, e.g. with a pair of flat pliers wrapped in fabric
Be careful! If you are too rough or only apply pressure at specific points when squeezing, you may dent the end cap.
Chalk bag belts are easy to shorten
Adjust the belt to the right length, cut off the excess and seal it with a lighter -> done! Then all you need to do is loosen the click fastener when putting it on and taking it off.
Please note that we can no longer exchange shortened belts.
If you need help, we are here for you!
Be sure to check the respective product page and the size chart first. Perhaps the bracelet can simply be exchanged for a different size.
Bracelet with rope engraving and magnetic clasp
If none of the sizes are suitable for you, we can also shorten the bracelet for you. To do this, we need precise information about how many cm it should be shortened by or what the total length of the bracelet should be.
We offer this service free of charge for as long as we can. However, this may result in longer processing times and therefore longer delivery times. Please understand this.
bracelet snap fastener
Unfortunately, it is not possible to shorten the bracelet to your desired length ;(
